UPDATE: Arrest made following series of fires in Newham and Waltham Forest

Detectives investigating a series of fires in Newham and Waltham Forest have made an arrest.

A 27-year-old man was arrested on the evening of Monday, 24 June on suspicion of burglary and possession of a bladed article.

He was further arrested on suspicion of arson and criminal damage.

He has been taken to an east London police station, where he remains.

The fires are being treated as suspicious and the incidents are being investigated by the North East area’s Community Support Unit, who are keeping an open mind as to the motive and whether there is any hate crime element to the incidents.

Police were called to outside a church in the Broadway, Stratford, E15 on Wednesday 19th June 2019 at 1000hrs. Sometime between 1900hrs and 0800hrs a fire had taken place and caused damage to the front door of the Church. It had been extinguished by the time police had been called.

Police were further called at 10:26hrs on Wednesday, 19 June to reports of a fire outside a church in Cann Hall Road, E11. The informant put the fire out. Graffiti was also found scratched onto the church door.

At 21:11hrs, police were called to reports of a fire outside a church in Ramsay Road, E7. Graffiti was also found on the door. Officers and the London Fire Brigade attended.

At 00:14hrs on Thursday, 20 June police were called to reports of a fire outside a church in Dyson Road, E15.

Officers and the London Fire Brigade attended. Again, graffiti was found on the door.

Enquiries into the full circumstances continue by CID and Community Safety Unit detectives.
