The family of a missing man from Dagenham who was found dead in London, has appealed for anyone who spoke to him in the days before his death to make contact with police.
The body of Kane Johnson, 18, was recovered from the River Thames near Lambeth Bridge on Easter Sunday, 21 April.
Kane had left his home address in Dagenham on Wednesday, 10 April and did not return home. He was reported missing by his family.
Police discovered, through CCTV enquiries, that Kane had been seen outside Longbridge Food and Wine shop in Longbridge Road just before midnight on the day he left home.
Enquiries have established that Kane was seen talking to a male at the bus stop. The male is white, wearing grey joggers with a black stripe, white T-shirt and black trainers. He spoke with Kane for a short time before leaving in the direction of Becontree Avenue.
Police are keen to hear from anyone who was at the bus stop immediately outside Longbridge Food and Wine, particularly the man who spoke with Kane.
Kane is then believed to have boarded a Route N15 bus, at 00:37hrs on Thursday, 11 April from the Bennetts Castle Lane bus stop on Longbridge Road. The bus was heading in the direction of central London.
There is no indication of how or why Kane ended up at Lambeth Bridge.
Detective Sergeant Fiona Robinson, from the East Area Safeguarding team, based in Romford leads the enquiry. She said: “We are supporting Kane’s family at this most difficult time.
“There is nothing to indicate any suspicious circumstances contributed to Kane’s death, which following a post-mortem is being treated as unexplained.
“However, we have blanks in our timeline between Kane being seen in the CCTV footage at Longbridge Road and his body being recovered. I believe that people may be able to help fill in those blanks, which would, at the very least, bring a measure of comfort to Kane’s family.
“I am keen to identify the male Kane was talking to at the bus stop outside Longbridge Food and Wine on Wednesday, 10 April, but also anyone else who may have seen or spoken to him on that day and at any other point between then and Sunday, 21 April.”
When Kane left home, he was wearing a black Ralph Lauren T-shirt, black Fila sweatshirt, black Tommy Hilfiger jacket, grey shorts, black Fila tracksuit bottoms and black Nike trainers with beige soles.
Kane’s family said: “We, the family of Kane Johnson, are appealing to the public. We are completely devastated and broken by the loss of Kane. His last confirmed sighting was at Robin Hood, Dagenham and it is believed he got on an N15 bus towards London. Those are Kane’s last known movements. We would like any information about Kane between 10th and 21st April no matter how insignificant it may seem. It may help us find out what happened to him, and give some closure to our family.”
If you are the male, or saw the male who was talking to Kane in the CCTV footage in Longbridge Road on 10 April, or have any information about Kane during the time he was missing, please contact Detective Sergeant Robinson on 07741 686 981 or email: Fiona.Robinson@met.police.uk.
An Inquest was opened and adjourned on Tuesday, 9 July to a provisional date of Monday, 9 December.
