Man detained under Mental Health Act following arrest at Palace of Westminster

A man arrested inside the grounds of Palace of Westminster on the morning of Tuesday, 11 December has now been detained under the Mental Health Act.

At around 11.55hrs, the man tried to gain entry to the grounds of the Palace of Westminster via Carriage Gates, and ran towards officers posted there.

He did not comply with officers' requests to stop. A Taser was used by police.

The man, aged 29, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of trespassing at a protected site, and taken to a police station for questioning.

The arrested man, who was unarmed, underwent a mental health assessment. He has now been taken to hospital after being detained under the Mental Health Act.

The investigation continues to be led by officers from Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection.
