Sixth arrest in Newham murder

Detectives investigating the murder of Abdul Mayanja in Newham on Friday, 25 August have now arrested six people.

[A] A 22-year-old man was arrested on Sunday, 3 September on suspicion of murder and bailed to a date in late September.

[B] A 23-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of murder on Sunday, 3 September and bailed to a date in late September.

[C] A 19-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday, 6 September on suspicion of conspiring with others to commit murder and bailed to a date in early October.

[D] A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of conspiring with others to commit murder on Saturday, 9 September and bailed pending further enquiries to a date in early October.

[E] A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of conspiring with others to commit murder on Tuesday, 12 September and bailed pending further enquiries to date in early October.

[F] A 22-year-old man was also arrested on Tuesday, 12 September on suspicion of conspiring with others to commit murder and bailed pending further enquiries to a date in early October.

Police were called at approximately 22:40hrs on Friday, 25 August to reports of shots fired in Well Street, E15.

Firearms officers and the London Ambulance Service attended and found 19-year-old Abdul suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to an east London hospital where he sadly later died from his injuries.

A post-mortem examination held at East Ham Mortuary on Wednesday, 30 August found the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the chest.

An incident room has opened under the Homicide and Major Crime Command.

Detective Inspector Paul Considine, leading the investigation, said: "Although we have made arrests, I am still eager to hear from anyone who was in Well Street or in the surrounding area at the time of the murder.

"Any information, no matter how insignificant, may prove vital in helping us confirm what happened that night.

"Abdul left his home at 22:00hrs, just 40 minutes before he was shot. I need to know who was responsible for shooting Abdul so that I can get some justice for his family.

"I fully appreciate that witnesses may be reluctant to come forward, but it is vital that we apprehend those responsible. All information will be treated with the utmost discretion."
