Statement concerning allegations made against Sir Edward Heath

Following an article in today's Daily Mirror, 4 August, which details an allegation of rape ("Ted Heath Scandal: Claims of sex with boy, 12") the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) has received a number of specific media enquiries about this matter.

In April 2015 an allegation of rape was made to the MPS. An officer from Operation Fairbank interviewed the complainant that same month and obtained a full account. Support services were offered. However, after a full assessment of the allegation there were no lines of enquiry that could proportionately be pursued by the MPS.

Media continue to speculate on the identity of individuals who may feature as suspects within the ongoing investigation Operation Midland. The MPS wishes to make it clear that it will maintain its stance of neither confirming nor denying names of any individual who may or may not be part of this investigation.

Operation Midland continues to be a complex and sensitive investigation, and the MPS will not be giving a running commentary on its progress. This is important for the integrity of the investigation and protecting evidence that may form part of it.
