Appeal for witnesses to sexual assault in Hackney

Police are appealing for the public’s help in identifying a man after a woman was sexually assaulted.

On Thursday, 16 September, shortly before 00:50hrs, the woman, who was talking on her mobile phone in Mare Street, near the junction of Sylvester Road, was approached by a man who walked past her and put his hand up her skirt before sexually assaulting her.

The woman shouted at the man who then walked off.

Detectives investigating the incident would like to trace any witnesses who were in the area at the time and have released an image of a man they would like to identify and speak to.

Detective Constable John Stainforth, the investigating officer, said: “We would urgently like to trace the man pictured and I would ask anyone who recognises him to contact police immediately.”

Witnesses or anyone with any information is asked to call police on 101 quoting CAD 260/16Sep or Crimestoppers, 100 per cent anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
