A serving Detective Sergeant has been cleared of allegedly stealing a large sum of money at a gross misconduct hearing yesterday, Thursday, 2 August.

DS Iain Wallace attached to Newham borough within the North East Borough Command Unit faced allegations that his actions amounted to a breach of the standards of professional behaviour, in respect of ‘discreditable conduct’ and ‘honesty and integrity’.

It was alleged that on 26 August 2016, DS Wallace stole £2,000 cash from an address whilst conducting a search under Section 18 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984.

In February 2017, a Directorate of Professional Standards investigation concluded that the officer had no case to answer. The complainant appealed this decision to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) a month later. In October 2017, the IOPC directed a gross misconduct hearing be held.

The evidence heard from the complainant with regard to the theft was found to be contradictory, evasive and inconsistent and was therefore unreliable.

The panel concluded that there was no case to answer.
