UPDATE: Man charged with murder of his grandmother in Croydon

Detectives investigating the murder of a woman in Croydon have charged a man.

Verushan Manoharan, 31 (07.04.91), of Kingsley Road, Croydon, was charged on the evening of Wednesday, 22 June with murder.

He is due to appear in custody today at Croydon Magistrates' Court.

Police were called by London Ambulance Service at around 21:20hrs on Tuesday, 21 June, to a woman suffering stab injuries at a residential address in Brigstock Road, Thornton Heath.

Officers attended along with ambulance colleagues. An 89-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

She has been named as Sakunthala Francis. Her family are aware and are being supported by specialist officers. A post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course.

A man was arrested at another address in Croydon a short time later. He was later charged as above.

Enquiries continue to establish the full circumstances. At this stage, nobody else is sought in connection with the death. The deceased and the man charged are grandmother and grandson.
