Appeal following assault on security guard in Leytonstone

Police investigating a Boxing Day assault on a security guard in Leytonstone are releasing an image of a man they wish to speak to in connection with the attack.

At around 16:22hrs on 26 December 2025, police were called to Tesco on Gainsborough Road, E11 after a security guard - aged in his 60s - was attacked when attempting to speak to a man leaving the store.

He suffered a serious eye injury which required hospital treatment and has caused ongoing visual impairment.

Two other people, a second security guard and a member of the public who attempted to prevent the assault, also suffered minor injuries.

Detective Chief Inspector Claudine Davie, whose team is leading the investigation, said: “This was a violent attack on a member of staff who was simply doing his job.

“We have spoken to a number of people who witnessed the incident but are keen to speak to anyone who recognises the man in this CCTV image and would ask them to contact us as soon as possible.

“Similarly, anyone who saw the attack and has not yet spoken to police is encouraged to come forward and speak to officers.”
