Appeal to identify five people following protest in Southwark

Detectives investigating a number of suspected crimes at an Eritrean demonstration which became violent in Camberwell are calling for the public’s assistance to help identify five people who may have information to assist their enquiries.

On 30 December 2023 more than 100 people, some armed with sticks and missiles, attacked the Lighthouse Theatre in Camberwell Road SE5.

Police officers in attendance at the demonstration who sought to protect the public came under attack - resulting in four officers sustaining injuries including concussions and some requiring hospital treatment after being struck by missiles.

Detective Superintendent Sian Thomas, who is leading the investigation, said:
“The level of violence used against officers, who were there to keep the public safe and protect people in a theatre, is some of the worst I have seen.

“We have so far arrested 44 people for a number of offences relating to this demonstration and continue to make progress, however, there are still outstanding a number of suspects that we need the public’s help to identify.”
