Man arrested following fatal stabbing in Plumstead

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman in her 80s was fatally stabbed outside her home address.

Met police officers were called at 08:50hrs on Wednesday, 1 April to Red Lion Place, Plumstead following reports of a man in possession of a knife. Officers attended alongside paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and a woman was located with serious injuries. The woman in her 80s was taken to hospital where she sadly died.

Another man was also threatened with a knife but did not sustain any injuries.

Shortly after 09:10hrs a man in his 60s presented himself at a nearby Met police station where he was arrested on suspicion of murder. He was taken to hospital by officers, where he is receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

At this stage, it is believed the person arrested and deceased victim were known to each other. Officers are not looking for any further suspects.

The woman’s family are aware and will continue to be supported by specialist officers.

Detective Inspector Dean Grice, who is leading on the Met’s investigation, said: “This is a deeply tragic incident, and our thoughts remain firmly with the victim’s family during this difficult time.

“Officers responded swiftly to the initial reports and worked closely with London Ambulance Service colleagues to provide immediate care at the scene.

“A prompt and coordinated investigation has now been launched to establish the full circumstances, and specialist officers are continuing to support the family throughout.”

Detective Superintendent James Derham, who leads policing in the local area, added: “At this stage, we believe that this was an isolated incident and I want to reassure the community that there is no wider risk to the public.
