Man jailed for life for fatal shooting in Brixton

A man has been jailed for the fatal shooting of Gary Mayhew in Brixton - after police linked him to the murder using extensive CCTV and expert ballistics evidence.

The conviction highlights the Met's zero-tolerance approach to gun violence and serious crime.

On Friday, 21 August a jury at Croydon Crown Court found Trevin Campbell, 35 (31.08.1990) guilty of murder. At the same court on Tuesday, 25 August he was sentenced to life imprisonment and ordered to serve a minimum tariff of 30 years.

Detective Inspector Emma Sharp, who led the investigation, said:

"This has been a complex and extensive investigation spanning several years. Our officers remained committed to securing justice for Gary and his family and continued to pursue every available line of enquiry to build the strongest possible evidential case.

"Through detailed CCTV analysis, forensic examination and expert witness evidence, we were able to demonstrate Campbell's responsibility for Gary's murder and ensure he was brought to justice.

"Our thoughts remain with Gary's family and friends, who have shown remarkable strength throughout this process.

"The use of firearms on London's streets has devastating consequences for victims, families and communities. This conviction demonstrates our determination to tackle gun crime and hold those responsible fully accountable."

The investigation

At around 06:13hrs on 21 October 2021, police were called to Kings College Hospital where Gary Mayhew had self-presented with gunshot wounds to his legs. Despite the efforts of medical staff, the 32-year-old sadly died in hospital later that day.

Police established that Gary had been shot minutes after leaving a silent disco in Belinda Road, Brixton, at around 06:00hrs.

Campbell was quickly identified as a suspect and was arrested four days after the murder, as he boarded a flight to Jamaica from Gatwick Airport. The gun has never been recovered.

He was charged with murder, but the matter was discontinued pending further enquiries in January 2022 after the Crown Prosecution Service established there was insufficient prospect of conviction.

Detectives continued to investigate the case, determined to secure justice for Gary’s family.

To build the case against Campbell, officers reviewed key pieces of CCTV, recovered mobile phone data that linked him to the scene and obtained expert ballistics evidence that supported the theory he had fired the shot from a pistol hidden in his jacket pocket.

That led to his re-arrest on 12 December 2025. The Crown Prosecution Service authorised charges, and Campbell appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on 13 December 2025 charged with murder.

Following a two-week trial at Croydon Crown Court, Campbell, of Harrington Road, South Norwood, was found guilty on Friday, 21 August of murder.
