Man sentenced for murdering ex-girlfriend
A man who murdered his ex-girlfriend while she was on a date with another man has been jailed for life following a Met Police investigation.
Halyna Hoisan, 29, had escaped her abusive partner in April 2025, moving away and securing a non-molestation order against him.
But Yurii Muzyka, then aged 33, embarked on a campaign of stalking and harassment - with Halyna even finding a tracker in their four-year-old daughter's scooter.
Muzyka became obsessed with Halyna after she developed a new relationship, kicking down her door armed with a knife and a chisel when he discovered she was in the flat with another man.
He stabbed Halyna six times on Wednesday, 27 August and she died at the scene. He filmed a selfie video next to her as she lay dying on the floor.
Halyna's murder was a horrific case of violence against women and girls. This issue remains at the forefront of the Met's mission.
Over the last year in London, arrests and charges for offences involving violence against women and girls have increased by 71 per cent, while the number of rape cases where officers had secured charges have more than doubled.
Muzyka, 34 (23.03.1992), of Burlington Road, New Malden, was found guilty of murder and possession of an offensive weapon on Friday, 22 May. He was sentenced to life imprisonment to serve a minimum of 30 years on Friday, 29 May.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Franklin, whose team led the investigation, said: "Halyna's murder was an appalling act of cruelty. Muzyka robbed a child of her devoted mother and parents of a loving daughter.
"Detectives worked tirelessly to bring Muzyka to justice and the successful conviction highlights the Met's commitment to bringing dangerous men to justice and tackling violence against women and girls."
Halyna's family said: “The family and close friends of Halyna are grateful to the Metropolitan Police and the Crown Prosecution Service for their hard work and support in helping to secure justice for Halyna.
"Halyna was a deeply loved daughter, mother and friend whose life was taken in a cruel and senseless act of violence. Her loss has devastated everybody who knew and loved her.
"While no verdict will ever bring Halyna back, we are thankful that justice has now been served. We would now ask for privacy and space for the family.”
The investigation
Police were called to reports of a stabbing in a flat on Tyler Street, Greenwich at 22.20hrs on Wednesday, 27 August 2025.
Inside, they found the body of Halyna with six stab wounds. Following the attack, Muzyka stabbed himself and he was taken to hospital. Their daughter was found asleep in the other room.
Detectives quickly established that Muzyka had kicked down the door of the flat after finding out Halyna was on a date.
The couple had previously been in a relationship for several years, and Halyna moved out of their home in Kingston in April 2025.
After this, Muzyka stalked and harassed her. As a part of this, she found a tracking device on their daughter's scooter, he turned up at their home and stole her phone and even called her mother threatening to harm her.
On Wednesday, 20 August - a week before Halyna was killed - she secured a non-molestation order against Muzyka.
Analysis of Muzyka's phone found that in this period he became fixated with attacking her. Ten images of spywear were found, 44 of masks, 186 of human anatomy, specifically the heart and chest, and 261 of knives.
Further analysis of Muzyka's devices found a video he had recorded for his mother on the day of the murder, complaining that Halyna was meeting other men. That afternoon, he spent £34.99 on a knife.
The box for the knife and a copy of the non-molestation order were found on his kitchen table.
Detectives tracked his movements that afternoon on CCTV. He set off from his home almost immediately after Halyna’s date arrived at her flat. The timing, combined with the videos he had made, suggested that this was not a coincidence and Muzyka knew of his arrival.
The placement of the stab wounds showed evidence of his research as they were calculated to cause the most damage.
Videos on Muzyka's phone showed that he had filmed himself next to Halyna after he fatally wounded her. He also sent a video message to his mother.
Muzyka was arrested on suspicion of murder at hospital. In police interview, Muzyka refused to take responsibility. He blamed Halyna for moving on with her life.
He was charged with murder on Friday, 5 September and remanded in custody.
