Murder investigation launched following fatal stabbing in Lewisham

Met detectives have launched a murder investigation following the fatal stabbing of a 23 year-old man in Grove Street, Lewisham on Wednesday, 31 December.

Police were called at around 12:35hrs on Wednesday, 31 December. Officers attended the scene alongside the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance, where a 23-year-old man was treated for a stab wound to the chest.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics and medical staff, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

At this early stage no arrests have been made and officers continue to make enquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Sam Townsend, who is leading the investigation said: “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the victim’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.

“Our investigation is progressing swiftly as we work to establish the full circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

“We understand that this will understandably cause concern within the local community. Please be assured that we have increased patrols in the area, and this investigation remains our highest priority.”

A crime scene remains in place.
