Murder investigation launched in Croydon

A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a woman in Croydon.

Police were called at around 19:00hrs on Monday, 20 January to an address in Bensham Lane to reports of an unresponsive woman.

Officers attended the address along with the London Ambulance Service. Sadly, the woman, aged 30, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her next of kin has been made aware, although we await formal identification.

Two men, both aged 21, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody.

Chief Superintendent Andy Brittain, who leads policing in Croydon, said: “We are saddened to hear about the loss of this young woman. We are currently supporting her family while they process this shocking news.

“At this early stage, we believe that the two men were known to the woman and there is no threat to the wider public.

“I understand the impact this incident will have on the community and we are doing everything in our power to investigate the circumstances of what happened. Throughout the day you may notice a higher police presence in the area, please do voice any concerns to officers.

“Although we have made two arrests, we still need to have an understanding as to what took place last night in Bensham Lane. Did you hear anything unusual? Did you see anyone leaving the property? If you did, then please do the right thing and speak with us.”

A special post-mortem examination will take place today, Tuesday, 21 January.

Anyone with information which could assist the investigation is asked to call 101 quoting CAD 5952/20Jan.
