Officers rescue child from west London river

A child was rescued from the River Brent on Saturday by brave and quick-thinking police officers.

The three officers went to the river near Studland Road, Hanwell shortly after 1500hrs on Saturday, 30 March, having been called by a member of the public to a child in the water.

Police Sergeant Yusuf Hassaniyeh, Police Community Support Officer James Tupman and Police Constable Lee Dahir attended the scene. The child appeared to be stranded in waist high water and not responding to members of the public or police, so Sergeant Hassaniyeh entered the water to rescue the child and ensure that he was safely transferred into the care of ambulance colleagues with the assistance of PCSO Tupman and PC Dahir.

Sergeant Yusuf Hassaniyeh, recounted the incident, saying: "When the call was circulated, there was no hesitation. We knew that every second counted, and we were determined to reach the child before it was too late.”

Acting Chief Inspector Jonathon Hubbard praised the officers for their courage and dedication. "Their bravery exemplifies the finest qualities of the police service," he remarked. "We are immensely proud of their actions, which may well have saved a child’s life.”

The nine-year-old boy was reunited with family members and had not suffered any ill-effects from the ordeal.
