Police appeal following attempted rape in Islington

Detectives are appealing for witnesses following an attempted rape in Islington.

Police were called at 18:55hrs on Tuesday, 14 October to reports of an attempted rape in Gillespie Park, Islington.

A woman was walking through the park when she was approached by an unknown man, hovering near some bushes, who then attempted to rape her. The woman fled the scene and reported a separate unknown man chased the attacker. Officers believe this man may be a potential witness and want to speak to him as part of their investigation.

This happened at approximately 18:50hrs and the suspect is described as Black, around 5"8 and wore dark clothing.

The victim is currently being supported by specialist officers.

An investigation has been launched and officers are keen to speak to the man who chased after the suspect, or any other witnesses.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Ridley, from the Central North Public Protection Team, said: “This was an attack targeting a lone female in an open park space. We'd like to reassure the public that we are working at pace to try and find this suspect.

"We'd really like to speak to the man who chased after the suspect, as he may have some crucial details to help us identify him.

"The location is used to access nearby Finsbury Park and Arsenal Underground Station and therefore frequented by commuters who may have seen or heard the attack or who may have also noticed the suspect in the area prior to the incident.

"Or if you have noticed any concerning behaviour in the area recently please let us know. Even the smallest bit of information could make a real difference in our investigation."

A crime scene is currently in place in the park as enquiries continue.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, or online, quoting 6576/14OCT.

Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
