Arrest made over Shadwell fatal stabbing

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a fatal stabbing in Shadwell.

On Friday, 10 April, a 29-year-old man was arrested in the Birmingham area after handing himself in at a West Midlands Police station.

He has been taken to a police station in East London, where he remains.

Separately, a 45-year-old man was arrested in the Greenwich area on Wednesday, 8 April on suspicion of assisting an offender. He was subsequently bailed pending further enquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Whellams, who is leading the Met’s investigation, said:

“This is a significant update, which I hope brings reassurance to the local community.

“While we have made an arrest, our investigation continues and we are working to identify the victim and his next of kin.”

Police were called at 16:01hrs on Tuesday, 7 April to reports of an assault on Watney Street.

Officers attended with the London Ambulance Service and found a man, believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s, with a knife wound.

He was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition where, despite the efforts of medical staff, he sadly died. A forensic post-mortem established that he died from a single stab wound.

Detectives are working to confirm the victim’s identity and notify his next of kin.

A second man, in his 50s, was found at the scene with a minor injury to his arm. He was taken to hospital but later discharged.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting CAD 5004/7APRIL. Information can also be provided anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
