Conditions for protests on 6th and 7th September

We have imposed conditions under the Public Order Act to prevent serious disruption at two protests and events this weekend.

Saturday

Palestine Coalition

The demonstration organised by the Palestine Coalition, which includes the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Stop the War and other groups, will form up in Russell Square and then march to Whitehall, via the Strand.

Anyone gathering ahead of the demonstration must remain in the shaded area on the map below.

Anyone participating in the march must follow the specified route below.

There will be an assembly in Whitehall where speeches will take place. Attendees must remain in the shaded area below. The assembly must conclude by 17:30hrs.

A counter-protest may take place along the route but we have been unable to secure confirmation from the likely organisers. We reserve the right to impose conditions on the ground if a protest does take place.

Defend Our Juries

Also on Saturday afternoon, a protest organised by Defend Our Juries is due to take place in Parliament Square and it is likely to involve people expressing support for proscribed terrorist organisation Palestine Action which is a criminal offence under the Terrorism Act.

More detail on our policing response to this protest was shared in a media briefing earlier today and can be found here.

Other events

We are monitoring a number of parallel events on Saturday including a Pro-Life march in Westminster organised by March for Life against which a counter protest is expected.

Sunday

National March Against Antisemitism

On Sunday, a national march against antisemitism, organised by the Campaign Against Antisemitism will take place in central London from 13:00hrs.

Following discussions with the march organisers and community stakeholders, conditions have been put in place to minimise disruption in the local area.

Anyone taking part in the event must form up in Hallam Street, which is the shaded area on the map below

Anyone taking part in the march must remain on the route shown on the map below.

Anyone taking part in the assembly at the end of the march must remain in the shaded area on the map below.

We recognise the continuing concerns among members of London’s Jewish communities about safety at events. We’re working with the organisers and the Community Security Trust to make sure the policing and wider safety plan is robust.

We will have officers along the route to deal with any incidents and to ensure the safety of everyone taking part.

Protests in the vicinity of hotels accommodating asylum seekers

We’re prepared for any further protests in the vicinity of hotels accommodating asylum seekers. We understand the strength of feeling on this issue and we have no interest in standing in the way of protest providing it is peaceful and lawful.

Sadly last weekend we saw a minority cross the line into criminality, including unacceptable aggression directed at officers. In one incident, masked men confronted officers inside a shopping centre in Canary Wharf, officers had to use force – including PAVA spray – to protect themselves.

There has been commentary on social media about this incident, with some claims that officers intentionally directed that force towards women and a child. These claims are not true.

We are making video footage available to provide an insight into the challenging situation they faced.

We’d continue to urge anyone taking part in protests to do so lawfully, to cooperate with officers and to consider their own responsibilities for the safety of their children if they’re bringing them to protests and putting them in close proximity to confrontational situations.

We reserve the right to impose conditions on any such protests that take place this weekend in order to prevent disorder or serious disruption.

If conditions are imposed, the details will be posted on the @MetPoliceUK X account.
