Man charged following fatal collision in Stepney Green

A man has been charged as part of an ongoing investigation into a fatal collision in Stepney Green.

An investigation was launched after police were called at around 23:15hrs on Thursday, 6 August to reports of a collision involving a car and cyclist on Aylward Street.

The cyclist was taken to hospital where he sadly died on Sunday, 9 August. He can be named as 51-year-old Chris Powell. His next-of-kin continue to be supported by specialist officers.

Parvez Ahmed Rahman, 33 (23.04.93), of Russia Lane, Bethnal Green, was charged on Friday, 7 August with attempted murder and failing to stop after a road collision.

He appeared on Saturday, 8 August at Thames Magistrates' Court where he was remanded into custody. He is due to next appear at the Old Bailey on Friday, 4 September.

Detective Chief Inspector Lucie Card, who is leading the Met's investigation, said: “Our thoughts remain with Christopher's family and friends at this extremely difficult time.

“As we try to build up a full picture of the incident, we are appealing to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has any relevant information - particularly anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage.”
