Man charged with murder following the death of a 74‑year‑old woman in Newham

Detectives investigating the death of a 74‑year‑old woman in Newham have charged a man with murder.

Police were called to a residential property in St George’s Square, E7 on Tuesday, 17 February at 12:36hrs.

Officers attended and attempted to provide first aid to a woman. However, despite their best efforts, she was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Richard Clayton, 44 (30.03.81), of St George’s Square, E7, was arrested at the scene and later charged with murder on Wednesday, 18 February.

He appeared at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court today (Thursday, 19 February), where he was remanded into custody ahead of his second court appearance.

Clayton will next appear at the Old Bailey on Monday, 23 February.

The woman’s next‑of‑kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
