Man sentenced after murdering his brother

A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 15 years for murdering his brother.

On Wednesday, 17 September at the Inner London Crown Court, Peter John, 59 (03.12.65), of Homerton Road, Hackney, pleaded guilty to killing Miller John, aged 60. He was sentenced on Thursday, 18 December at the same court.

Police were alerted after John attended Stoke Newington police station shortly after 10:00hrs on Monday, 3 March.

While standing outside the station, he called 999 and told the operator he thought he had committed murder. When asked to clarify, he said: “I bludgeoned my brother last night in a fit of rage.” While still on the phone, officers came outside and spoke to him.

John told officers the incident had happened the previous night and that he woke up that morning to find his brother lying dead on the floor. He then left the house and walked to the police station.

Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended the address in Homerton Road where they discovered Miller’s body. He had been assaulted with a number of implements, including a garden fork and a walking stick, and suffered multiple puncture wounds to his leg and head.

John was arrested on Monday, 3 March and charged Tuesday, 4 March.

Following John’s confession, officers reviewed evidence, including CCTV footage, to piece together his movements before and after the attack. This was crucial in supporting the investigation and building a strong case.

Detective Inspector John Marriott, who led the investigation, said:

“I hope today’s sentencing brings some comfort to the John family. I can only imagine how hard the past few months have been for them.

“Peter carried out a senseless attack against his brother in the home they shared together. Throughout this difficult time, our officers have worked closely with the family to provide support, as always our thoughts are with them.”
