Met launches murder investigation following fatal stabbing in Wimbledon

The Met has launched a murder investigation after a man in his 40s was fatally stabbed in the centre of Wimbledon.

At 00:37hrs on Sunday, 22 February, officers, the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended reports of a stabbing on The Broadway, Wimbledon.

A man was found with stab wounds and was treated at the scene by paramedics. Despite their efforts, he died shortly after their arrival. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Following urgent enquiries, officers located a man in his 30s later that night and arrested him on suspicion of murder. He remains in police custody.

This is being treated as an isolated incident. Homicide detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command are leading the investigation and are not seeking anyone else at this stage.

Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jolley, who is leading the investigation, said: “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family. This is a shocking act of violence in the heart of a busy town, and we understand the impact this will have on the local community.

“While we have made an arrest, we still need anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to come forward. No detail is too small.”

Anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting CAD 244/22FEB.
